Job Description:
The position of the Community Development Facilitator is part of a Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation project being implemented in the Solomon Islands with funding from the Australian Government through the Climate Resilient by Nature. The project will be implemented for 12 months in 8 communities in North Malaita and Makira/Ulawa Province. The overall objective of the project is to improve the resilience of agricultural, forest and mangrove ecosystems in support of food security, diversity and livelihoods of women and people with disabilities in all eight communities.
The project will take on the approach of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) initiatives to regenerate, restore and protect mangrove forests, agricultural land and tropical forests in order to enhance community resilience to climate change, strengthen climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods, and reduce disaster risks, while strengthening community capacity, leadership and confidence. By applying FMNR, WV’s pioneering land restoration technique, to mangrove restoration, the project will increase marine life habitats, reduce the impact of rising sea levels, storm surges and tsunamis, capture carbon and prevent sediment entering reefs and waterways.
Project activities will be designed and implemented in partnership with schools, farmers, and households in target communities. WV will be led by OPDs through peak body, PWDSI, in designing activities that encourage the participation of people with disabilities. WV will identify practical ways to mainstream gender in the project and will work with established Savings Groups (from existing WV livelihoods and DRR projects) in target communities, which all have at least 50% female membership, to ensure women and their concerns are fully incorporated in project design and implementation. Government partners include the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology and its provincial extension officers who will support farmers and land holders to reduce land and mangrove clearing and better manage the natural environment.
The key purpose of the CDF position is to organize and mobilize the target schools and communities to ensure sustainable impact and ownership of project interventions, as well as to be the direct implementer and information gatherer for project activities in the communities. The position will be based in the Makira and Malaita Area Program with 75% of time spent in communities. The CDF may at times perform duties outside of the tasks specified in the JD. The CDF is also expected to commit to the Biblical principle of “walking an extra mile”; sacrificing time for community work without further reward may be required at times.
